At Nintendo’s big Switch 2 Direct, the company revealed the launch date for the new console, and also when preorders would go live. However, the company has now stated that it’s delaying preorders for U.S.-based customers due to the recent tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump. It says will update timing on the preorders later, before the console’s launch worldwide on June 5.
Nintendo’s statement, as seen by GamesBeat, says, “Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged.”
President Trump revealed the tariffs on Wednesday, the same day as the Direct. These would add at least 10% tariffs on any goods coming into the United States, with Chinese goods getting a 54% tariff and Vietnamese goods getting a 46% tariff. The original Nintendo Switch was primarily manufactured at Nintendo’s factories in China and Vietnam, though it’s not yet clear if that’s where the Switch 2 is also to be built.
Nintendo revealed at the Direct that the Switch 2 would cost $449, and at least one first-party game — Mario Kart World — cost $79. A few analysts, including Niko Partners, theorized that one of the reasons the prices were so high compared to previous Nintendo consoles and games, was because of potential tariffs.
